John Slade, Proprietor of ‘Take Five Fairs’ originally staged an Art Nouveau and Art Deco Fair three or four times a year at the Twickenham venue. This stylish Fair also included the earlier Arts and Crafts and later post-war to ‘60’s period styles and designs. But now, with a strong interest in vintage fashion, John is introducing a new category and a larger percentage of stallholders will now be displaying Vintage Fashion. John’s Deco Fairs have always included several stallholders specialising in this field, but the proportion will now be much higher and the new title should attract more specialist dealers and buyers.
Vintage fashion is very popular - the Victorian era, the Roaring Twenties, wartime and ‘50’s, the swinging 60-70’s look, even some of the bolder ‘80’s clothes are sought after. There will be an abundance of frocks on the clothes rails! Buyers are predominantly female and of all ages, with fashion students looking for inspiration and Designers hoping to pick up clothes, textiles and trimmings. These Fairs are regarded as a great source for discovering costumes and accessories, shoes, hats and bags, often for stage productions and films. It is not only London based interest as often foreign buyers visit these Fairs and many of the Dealer’s could ‘name-drop’ about the famous actresses, singers and Designers they have served.
There will also be sparkling ranges of fine vintage jewellery, costume jewellery, Bakelite, including older Lea Stein pieces, together with other trinkets and adornments, fans, accessories and vanity products, including commercial perfume bottles and compacts. Some early vanity goods can be unusual and often bizarre, so well worth checking out!
John is hoping that some of the visiting public and Dealers too, will turn out in vintage style. Quite a few of the visitors to these Fairs take on the ‘whole look’, the hair is coiffed accordingly, the period make up will have been applied immaculately. Matching shoes, handbags and gloves will have been donned, along with seamed stockings – the works! You can bet that the underwear will be vintage too, corsets, suspenders, cami-knickers, frilly petti-coats, but of course these will be hidden from view!! The ladies love to wear hats, which are guaranteed to turn heads and there is no self-consciousness amongst them as they carry off the look with style! Don’t think that this just applies to ladies as quite a few of the gents turn up wearing smart tweed suits, military jackets, top hats, bowlers, and spats, along with elegant walking canes and small cases! This all adds to the atmosphere of the Fair, creating a buzz with the vibrant and colourful fashions both on display and on parade - Oh! – and of course, watch out for the Cupid’s bow red lipstick!
This Fair is still for those searching for Decorative items from the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Post War period. Expect to find lots of the original dealers who will still be offering a great selection of goods. The Stoop Stadium venue offers a wonderful setting for magnificent original furniture – from sumptuously shaped sofas and armchairs to cocktail cabinets and occasional tables. There are furniture dealers throughout the linked halls, showing elegant sets of exotic wood dining tables and chairs, birds eye maple and walnut chests of drawers, display cabinets, screens, trolleys, lighting, including period up lighters, mirrors, clocks and rugs. Several dealers offer original prints and posters, watercolours and oils. You will find a wide range of decorative items made from ceramics, glass, metal and wood ready for placing on those fancy shaped and glazed display cabinets, or on oak stands and bookcases, black mirror topped and chrome side tables or the surfaces of rosewood sideboards - all of which can be sourced at the Fair! Look out for plaques, tiles, masks, bisque bathing belles, signed bronze sculptures, silver and plate, copper, brass and chrome, Bakelite and plastics. Examples of working period telephones are also available, some in rarer colours and the specialist dealer also offers servicing, repairs, conversions and spares. There are usually a few Dealers offering vintage and contemporary authoritative books on related subjects and all the Decorative Arts, which will feature strongly throughout the Fair.
John’s Dealers have to be competitive in a marketplace with up to 150 stands and with such a superb variety of goods, priced at all levels, there will be something to suit everyone's pocket!
This new Fair will showcase at the Harlequins Stoop Rugby Stadium at Twickenham, on Sunday, 25th March 2012. This Fair runs from 9am to 4pm - admission at just £3.50. There are currently no plans to change this category at the regular Deco Fairs held at the Woking venue.
